Q: Can I overdose
my pond?
A: Yes
and no. If you don't have proper aeration, the bacteria may
cause an oxygen problem. The bacteria will use some oxygen, so
if there is not much oxygen available anyway, then your fish may
suffer.
Q: I've
gone through all of the recommended steps and my pond still hasn't
cleared.
A: It
should take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on the size of the
pond and how bad the problem is. When the products don't seem to
be working, it is usually a pH problem (either too high or low), the
temperature is too cold or there isn't enough oxygen in the
pond. We suggest checking these parameters with Little Giant
Test Strips and then correcting the problem according to your results.
Q: I
applied Nitrifier or Bio Balance to my green water and it turned brown
after the applications.
A: This
is good because the product is working, it is removing nutrients from
the water column and it is killing the algae. That is why the
green turns to brown. Continue to treat and it should continue
to clear the water fairly rapidly thereafter.
Q: I
have algae growing on the sides of my pond and the Nitrifier won't
take it off.
A: It
is best to wipe or scrub the algae off the sides then treat with
Nitrifier. This way, the suspended algae will either be swept
out by the filter or removed by the bacteria and enzyme complex.
Nitrifier should be able to retard any new growth. New growth
should still grow, but not quite as rapidly.
Q: I
applied Bio Balance or Nitrifier and now I am getting a bad odor.
A: The
odor is a rare case, however this simply means the bacteria has begun
to work on the anaerobic sludges in the pond and as the sludge
decreases, there may be some release of odor. It should not
linger as the product will continue to remove the odor causing
substance.
Q: If
I apply more, will the product work faster?
A: No.
With bacteria and enzyme products, more doesn't always mean
better. If the product is going to work, it will work with the
suggested application. To apply more would simply be a waste.
Q: Should
there be any residue left on top of the water after treatment?
A: There
could be after treatment with Bio Balance. some of the wheat or
whey substrate may linger but should dissipate after a short
while. If the fish eat the wheat and whey, it will not harm them
in any way.
Q: What
if my dog happens to drink out of the pond?
A: There
is already natural bacteria in the pond, all we are doing is adding
more of the same bacteria that are formulated to better handle
environmental extremes to perform much better than the bacteria that
are already present. This will not harm your pets.
Q: What
is the difference between Nitrifier and Bio Balance?
A: A
good rule of thumb is that Nitrifier is for green water and Bio
Balance is for sludge and suspended particles. However, Bio
Balance does have a side effect of cleaning green water and
sludge. Nitrifier is more efficient at removing ammonia, nitrite
and nitrate as well as green water.
Q: Will
Little Giant bacteria eat up leaves on the bottom of my pond?
A: Bacteria
will not eat an entire leaf. If the leaf has degraded to the
point to where it becomes part of the sludge layer, then the bacteria
should be able to perform its function. It is always best to dip
net leaves out of the pond first before application.
